00:00:56:02 – 00:01:39:06

Well, hello and welcome to another episode of Shorr Solutions: The Podcast. And I’m your host, Jay Shorr. Today we’re going to be speaking about the importance of giving back. This is episode number 117. And the reason that we’re sharing this now is we’re approaching the holiday season. And this is a really important time to be giving back. And by giving back, I mean to charity. We’re supposed to help one another. We’re supposed to help our neighbor. We’re supposed to help the people in need the most. And I’m going to share real briefly about the importance of giving back.

00:01:39:08 – 00:05:22:13

So let’s talk about why is giving back important for aesthetic practice owners? Number one, for a community connection, building a reputation, personal staff fulfillment and networking. And I’ll get into a few of these as we go.

So first let’s talk about community impact giving back when we have charitable contributions. It really helps address local and global issues such as poverty, education and the business that we’re in health care. So by supporting these causes, we actually contribute to the change in the community and well beyond. And there is a personal fulfillment involved in this. Why? Because we help others and that can lead to a sense of purpose and fulfillment. I know it does for me personally. I am on the board of directors of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and Memorial Health System foundation here in South Florida. Many people find joy and satisfaction in just knowing that their efforts are making a difference in someone else’s life. I know that personally, and our large donations basically from our foundation, both personally and professionally. It goes to help the sick children and their families, and we also make a contribution as a company.

It also helps to build connections, engaging in charitable activities really can help you connect with like minded individuals and businesses to share your values. This also fosters new friendships and a sense of belonging within your community, because people will know that you are a giving person and a giving company. And believe it or not, patients really feel good about doing business with those that actually give money back. You can volunteer or participate in charitable initiatives. It helps you in developing new skills and enhance existing ones, from leadership and teamwork to problem solving and communication.

So why not set an example by giving back? You inspire others to actually do the same. Monkey see monkey do. They see you giving back, and when they see the joy and the aspiration, what it does to help the community, it might just help those also inspire them to do the same, because your actions can encourage friends, family and colleagues to contribute to causes that they care about, not just what you care about. Creating a ripple effect of generosity and actually compassion. So overall, giving back enriches both your life and those the lives of others.

It creates a stronger, more compassionate society. It is very important to me. I can’t tell you how many times when it comes time for the holidays, we ask our staff to pick a charity as long as it’s not religious or political in nature. We will match their donation. If we sell something in our business, for example, every client that starts with us in the last quarter of the year, we give their first month of service back to the community in charity. If we sell something in our toolkit or a training session, for example, in our conversion cascade, we’ll give $100 back for each one that we sell. Now why is that? Because it also allows people to feel that if they’re purchasing something or they’re doing business with somebody, that that’s going for a great cause.

00:05:22:15 – 00:07:38:06

So when is a good time to give back? Holidays is always a great time. Why? Because we participate or sponsor events during those holidays.

Holidays are usually a time of giving back. Whether we give to the local, we will give to a more enhanced community, or we give to a national effort or even an international effort. Look, if you want to give to a religious community because you believe that that’s the right thing to do for you, by all means do it professionally. I don’t suggest it. Why? Because although I do believe in the religious aspect, our businesses are full of multicultural, multinational, multi political views and multi religious affiliations. And therefore, if you try to promote a political or religious to give back, somebody is going to be offended. And the world that we live in today, we really don’t want to offend anybody.

So what’s another one a milestone. Practice anniversaries or milestones. Community contributions that lets the community know that you’re involved with local and different things that you feel good about to help promote the health and the wellness within your community.

And ad hoc. Be flexible and responsive to emergency and emerging needs in the community. Example. I’m from South Florida. Anybody hear of hurricanes? For those of you in the Midwest, tornadoes. For those of you out west. Earthquakes. Wildfires. It’s happening everywhere. So what do we do? I know that, when they had different water shortages, what we did is we donated pallets of water, cases of water to those ravaged communities that didn’t have that water. It really doesn’t cost that much. You can do it for 500 or $1000. Get people involved with you. And I really suggest that you promote that. Let people know that you’re doing something to help others.

00:07:38:08 – 00:09:06:06

00:09:06:08 – 00:11:07:22

So how can a charitable effort improve the rapport in the community? That’s pretty simple. You all get together for a common cause. I don’t care whether you’re red or you’re blue or you’re Jewish or you’re Christian or you’re Muslim or whatever religious affiliation there are. Remember, I always share don’t promote that. Be proud of it, but don’t promote it within the professional world.

Also put it on social media. Let people know that you’re doing. It’s not just go fund me. Let’s let’s fund them. You know, I was raised where I was always told. It’s better to give than receive. And you know what? As a little boy, I never really understood that because I wanted to receive. But as we got older and we ended up getting a sense of being, there really is an amazing feeling that you get when you give. Because quite honestly, I’d rather not be the recipient of charitable contributions because I don’t want to be put in that position where I need it. I’d rather give it. When you don’t have money, you give time. Time is money when you’re so busy because you’ve made money and you don’t have time, then give back money. And if you’re at the end and you have time and you have money, give both.

Do whatever it is that you can. Let the community know that you’re there for them, to help them. Whether it’s the children, whether it’s the hungry, whether it’s the poor, whether it’s the community that has gone through some severe devastation due to earthquakes and fires and tornadoes and floods. Look, we’re in a world today. We know it. There’s always something going on.

00:11:08:00 – 00:12:03:00

So, look, how do you turn a cancellation policy into an opportunity to give back? I always used to collect deposits in my former practice, and we would have deposits to ensure that you showed up. And if you didn’t show up, we donated that deposit. We didn’t keep it. Now, how did we donate it? Actually, we were very large during practice, so we donated it to skin cancer. If you’re a cardiology practice, you donate it to the American Heart Association. Whatever it is, whatever your fancy. Have a cause. People, your patients, the community. Love knowing that it’s not all about money. People love doing business. I can’t repeat it enough. People love doing business with people that they know are community focused. You’re centered around helping other people.

00:12:03:02 – 00:13:27:05

So how can you involve your staff members in your charitable efforts? Well, Thanksgiving, for example, is coming upon us whenever this post may have already been. So have some of your people work in the food kitchens in the soup kitchens, either helping to cook, prepare, or serve meals, whether it is around Thanksgiving or whether it is around the end of the year. Holidays. Hanukkah. Kwanzaa. Christmas. Let’s mention them all. If there are incentive programs, give something that you will donate more in people’s names. If your staff gets out there and they do something, you will match or double their efforts. As I said, give your staff a choice of the charity. Our staff has picked water. It has passed us, picked hungry children, food for the community. It has picked let’s go eat turkeys for the community for Thanksgiving. It has picked the boys club and the girls club. I actually picked the children’s hospital. I have picked the American Heart Association. Our family was riddled with severe heart disease. I contribute to hospice. Hospice took care of many of my family members in their last days of palliative care. And then donation matching, as I’ve mentioned.

00:13:27:11 – 00:14:08:11

There are so many ways and basically what are the long term benefits of giving back to society? The number one benefit actually, it makes you feel good. That’s the number one. Number two it helps others. And what’s more important than helping others? I know we all want to help ourselves. What they say God helps those that help themselves. I believe God helps those that help others as well. And we owe it to our fellow brothers and sisters to help them in times of need. So it really has a long term benefit.

00:14:08:13 – 00:16:22:03

Ladies and gentlemen, that is my conclusion of giving back in our society and the importance of giving back. And I hope that in some small way, it has encouraged you to be more fruitful with the heart and energy of your labor in some small way to give back.
